A holy land pilgrimage

should be led by an accredited licensed guide/company, who appreciates the Christian tradition.

Why accredit?

A holy land pilgrimage should be led by an accredited licensed guide/company, who appreciates the Christian tradition and pilgrimage as a religious undertaking. A business that meets the requirements of an accreditation body demonstrates to its customers and its fellow industry that it is dedicated to offering high-quality products, experiences and services.

Before opening a tour company myself and researching about the accreditation process, I was on a trip to Israel, where I was participating in a Christian pilgrimage. I made sure I booked through an accredited tourism company, which paid off, as I had heard that my friends who went on a Catholic pilgrimage were less than impressed with their experience. They chose a cheaper tour operator, who was not accredited, and who had no industry standard to follow.

Going wrong

According to my friends, their tour was badly organised, with undertrained guides. The itinerary went from being jam-packed one day with no time to take in the sites properly, to days that were entirely wasted because of disorganisation. The tour's environmental practices were also questionable, but as they weren't accredited, they didn't have to answer to a governing body.

Improved profitability

Even if you know that your tours are excellent and not like the one above, being accredited gives potential customers peace of mind and they are more likely to pay a higher price for the security. With accreditation, your business will see improved profitability from the implementation of improved operating systems, increased confidence of domestic and international retailers, and the knowledge that you are contributing to a more competitive tourism industry.
